Our Homebirth Experience

We welcomed our beautiful baby, Theodore Rex into the world on the 22/3/2018. Our beautiful little Theodore Rex was born on 22/3/2018 at 3:34pm in the afternoon. He was a whopping 4.130kg baby (approx. 9lb 1oz), 53cm long and head circumference 36.3cm.

I would like to share our magical home birth experience with our Food For Life tribe!

We had a magical experience birthing our boy at home in our own environment. Sonya Beutel from Nurture Your Birth and Meg Clein were with us the whole day supporting and guiding us through the labour. The previous night I was waking every 30 min or so with cramping, nothing major. I got up Thursday morning and began work at 7am (first client of the day) – (If you know me you will understand I love my passion that its just part of my everyday life, I don’t consider it ‘work’). After my client left I was starting to consider this is it and cancelled the remainder of my day in preparation for our sons arrival. My husband took our teenager children to school and by the time he got back we got the house organised for the birth. I let my midwife know contractions were 4-5 min apart and by 9am 2 min apart. The rest of my birthing team also arrived.

My Husband Travis Rex (the excited husband, loving, patient and supportive birthing partner), my mother Laraine Haswell (grandmothers onlooking love), My best Friends Belinda Brett (childrens support and organiser), Ingrid Ryan (photograpy) and of course our children Charlotte and Felix were ready to welcome him into the world and experience a natural birth at home.

My birthing plan was to have least interference and allow my body to naturally progress through the birthing process. Leading up to the birth I had chiropractic care with Earl Murray (Murray Chiropractic) and Bodywork with Mathew Joseph (Himal Clinic). I also followed a very clean wholefoods diet that was anti inflammatory and reduced inflammation in my body to support the babies journey through the birth canal. I took ayurvedic herbal supports, raspberry leaf, and homeopathics to prepare my body. My husband also massaged my back and belly most nights to support lymphatic drainage and ease the pressure off my hips.

During the birth Travis supported me with Twenty8’s essential oils – Clary Sage, Veviter Oil, Wintergreen , Lavender and Peppermint. Using each one in different times and different applications. Maryanne Donnelly (Homeopath and midwife) also provided us with a list of homeopathics to use during labour for various pain relief, mood and fatigue. I must say that homeopathic pain relief was absolutely amazing! I also listened to Gowry Mothas Gentle Birth Method Meditation throughout the labour, this was fantastic to focus on and talk me through each phase of the birthing process.

I was lovingly provided, from some mummy friends of mine to use their birthing pool they had shared and birthed there youngest babies in. This was a first time experience for me birthing in a water pool. My oldest children were born in public hospitals, with the use of chemicals to induce labours quickly and delivery on a bed. I wasn’t ever given the option to use showers, pools or walk around.

Belinda picked up my daughter at 11am from school and Felix at 3pm. We were pushing our little man out when Felix got home so for a 12 year old boy it was certainly enough for him to see! As you can see in the photos his face says it all!

My choice to have a home birth with the support of a private midwife was to be an informed patient that understood my personal health philosophy and would support my choices. During the pregnancy I chose to avoid the gestational diabetes drink and regularly monitored my blood sugar levels. I also did not want Vit K injections, or the injection to release the placenta through synthetic hormones. If there was a need my midwife and I spoke about the 'and, ifs, buts' and so forth, making decisions if they were required then I would consent. I also took Alfalfa sprouts to support Vit K naturally in my body.

The placenta was also kept attached to our baby for approx. 2 hours post birth, the aim was to ensure it was fully drained before cutting so he gained the most benefit from the nutrients, once the cord was cut the placenta was kept and sent off to be encapsulated. There are great nutritional benefits to Placenta Encapsulation and taking these capsules post birth, reduces the chance of post natal depression, hormonal support, nutrition, energy and supports breastfeeding (the list goes on).

Birthing at home has given baby Theo a microbiome that will support him and establish a strong immune system. I feel so incredibly lucky that we were gifted this amazing experience from our creator and for everyone’s prayers throughout our pregnancy and challenges we faced from the get go.
